Located at the confluence of the McKenzie and the Willamette rivers, and surrounded by forests and wildlife, Eugene is a perfect location for any outdoors or nature enthusiasts. Eugene's main outdoor sports include biking, rafting, hiking and kayaking. However, in this beautiful city the number of things to do is endless.
What few people know about the city of Eugene, Oregon, is that this is where the sports apparel marvel Nike was started. In January of 1964, Phillip Knight (a track athlete at the University of Oregon), and his coach, Bill Bowerman, teamed up to create a company. They called this company Blue Ribbon Sports, and they sold shoes out of the back of Knight's vehicle. Soon they decided to make their own line of footwear and call it 'Nike', after the Greek Goddess of Victory. After paying Portland State University student, Carolyn Davidson, two dollars an hour to design a logo for 'Nike', Carolyn submitted the 'swoosh', along with her bill for thirty-five dollars. After creating many prototypes, and sponsoring many athletes along the way, the Nike shoe spread across the world, and eventually grew into the leading supplier of athletic shoe and apparel in the world.
